The aesthetics of the sublime have often been used to immortalize the ultimate sacrifice of so-called martyrs of the nation.

Monuments, poems, and altars are dedicated to those who lost their lives in the name of the common good, pompously elevating their death to an exalted and unattainable example.

In this work, I distort the conventional historical perspective through which the lives of two Italian heroes, Falcone and Borsellino, are seen and judged using the technique of anamorphosis. The rhetoric of dying for the state as a sublime moment flattens and nullifies the vitality and complex humanity of two friends, who in my relief become insubstantial silhouettes, consumed by time and fractured by the atrocious violence they suffered.
